Doug Anderson retired in June 1994 following his 30th year as Director of Vocal Music at McMinnville High School, McMinnville, Oregon. He was also Coordinator of Fine Arts for School District #40 in that city.
Following graduation from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1961 with a BME degree he taught vocal and instrumental music in the Dalton-Gurley, Nebraska School Districts for two years. He received an MM degree from the University of Oregon in 1965 and has been teaching in McMinnville, Oregon since that time.
The McMinnville High School "Twilighters" under his direction were consistent finalists at vocal jazz festivals throughout the Northwest and the Concert Choir was selected for the Oregon State Choir Festival in 1992 & 1993.
Mr. Anderson is the author of the JAZZ AND SHOW CHOIR HANDBOOK II published by Hinshaw Music in March 1993. He is also a contributing author to ON STAGE a comprehensive guide to staging, lighting, and sound published in 1980 by the Wenger Corporation. His writing has appeared in the ACDA CHORAL JOURNAL, the NAJE EDUCATOR, JAZZ MAGAZINE, the MENC JOURNAL, and as a featured columnist in THE KING'S SINGERS NEWSLETTER. He is a frequent guest director, clinician, and adjudicator for vocal jazz and choir festivals including the NAU Jazz/Madrigal Festival, Six Flags Choral Festivals, the National Finals of the Johnny Mann Great American Choral Festival, 1995 Oregon Ensemble State Contest, 1996 Oregon State Choir Championship, Northwest Vocal Jazz Festival, the Washington All-State Jazz Choir, the 1987 Nebraska All-State Jazz Choir, the 1992 Arizona All-State Jazz Choir, and the Anchorage All-City Choir. An active member of several professional organizations, Mr. Anderson is Past President of the Oregon Music Educators Association, Past National Chairman of the MENC Committee on Membership, Past National Chair of the ACDA Committee on Vocal Jazz and Show Choirs, and past Committee Representative for the ACDA Northwest Division. He was the organizing chair for the jazz interest sessions at the 1993 NW-MENC Convention in Portland. From 1999 to 2002 he was the Managing Director of the Oregon State Choir Championships.Doug is the founder-director of Jazz West Enterprise, a company presenting workshops for teachers in jazz choir techniques and materials.For 20 years, Doug and his wife, Janet, have operated DJ Records, a division of Jazz West. The Doug Anderson Vocal Jazz Series is published by Scott Music Publications. Among his awards are nomination to Outstanding Young Men of America and the 1977 Oregon Teacher of the Year. In May 1994, as well as May 1987 (the 20th Anniversary year), the Northwest Vocal Jazz Festival at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon was dedicated "to Doug Anderson for unselfish sharing in vocal jazz education". Upon his retirement, the McMinnville High School Auditorium was dedicated the Douglas D. Anderson Auditorium. In 2003, selected from Oregon, he was one of 19 nationally to receive an Outstanding Music Educator Award from The National Federation of State High School Associations. On September 23, 2005 Doug returned to Nebraska Wesleyan University to receive the 2005 Outstanding Alumni Award from the Music Department. Marquis Whos Who has selected Dougs biography for inclusion in the 2007 Edition of Whos Who in America. Doug and Janet served the United Methodist Church of McMinnville as Chancel Choir Director and Organist respectively and have shared their talents with the local community theater musical productions. Now, with a retirement move to Trout Lake, WA, they direct the Trout Lake Singers and assist with the music at the Trout Lake Presbyterian Church. They also are the Music Committee for the annual Trout Lake Festival of the Arts every third weekend in July. They enjoy travel with Timeshare properties, especially Schooner Landing on the Oregon Coast, where Doug is the President of the Board of Directors. Lest you think it's all work and no play, Doug enjoys the recreation opportunities available in the Pacific Northwest through membership in the Northwest Steelheaders Association and Pacific Crest Trail Association!
